The National Potrait Gallery houses portraits of historically important and famous British people. The gallery opened to the public in 1856 and its paintings are selected based on the significance of the sitter and not the artist. The collection includes photographs and caricatures as well as paintings, drawings and sculpture.
Famous portaits include the Chandos portrait of William Shakespeare and Holbein's portrait of Henry VIII. If you want to hear more about the portaits an audio guide gives you access to recorded commentaries on 170 famous portaits.
The roof top restaurant has stunning views of Westminster, Nelsons column and Big Ben or there is a stylish café downstairs.
